What makes a great talk

Image
Before class watch the video and answer the questions Do you think TED talks have a formula? Why is the idea crucial? How can you build your idea for the audience? Why do you think context is important? Why does the audience need a reason to care? Why is tailoring your language for the audience  important? What makes a talk worth sharing? Think of a talk or lecture that you have heard, that had: a great idea; had content that was important for you; that spoke to you in clearly understandable language, and now you think is worth sharing. Prepare to share that idea in class. This does not have to be a TED talk, it can be from any situation and originally in any language.

How to speak any language

Before class please watch the video and answer the questions.  Overall how do you rate this video? Do you agree, when studying another language, that you should relax and make mistakes? Is scraping the target language's writing system: a good strategy; an unrealistic plan, or does it depend on the language that you wish to learn? How do you feel about finding a "stickler", would this be empowering or demotivating? How do you feel about "shower conversations"? What are the advantages and disadvantages to having a "conversation buddy"?  Now please prepare a talk for class. Please talk about how you studied languages in the past. Describe both the good and bad points. Then do the same about how you study English now. Then tell us your thoughts about how you can study languages better in the future.

The Power of Yet

Before class please watch the video and answer the questions How do you rate this talk? How do you feel about the grade "not yet"? Do you have: a growth mindset, a fixed mindset or both depending on the situation?  Are we raising children who do not have big dreams?  Should we praise the process, the achievement or both? Can we change student's mindsets? Can equality in society be improved by changing student's mindsets to a growth mindset Prepare an anecdote about a time when a growth mindset helped you or a time when a fixed mindset hindered you.
