Pay Attention

This lesson's theme is attention. The video has a lot of high level vocabulary, so I am going to explain some words, phrases and idioms below, but not all. To be honest, I did not know the meaning of every word in the video, but from the context I could understand the meanings and learn the words. Everyone who is listening to something or reading something in their native language has the ability to learn word or phrase meanings from context. This is a skill that can also be learned in a second language or foreign language. So pay attention to what is said around the unknown word or to any visual clues there are.

Some vocabulary:
  1. Catch attention: This is a phrasal verb used at a time where suddenly you hear or see something and you start to concentrate on it. For example:  The beautiful flowers caught my attention.
  2. One step forward, two steps back: This is an idiom expressing frustration with your progress, you feel that you progress a little, but you fall back a lot.
  3. Use it, or lose it: This idiom expresses the idea that if you do not practice or use a skill, it will gradually be lost. It can also be used for physical abilities or strength. In the video it is connected to brain function.
  4. Downside: The meaning of downside is a negative aspect to a positive thing.
Please watch the video and answer the questions:
  1. What kind of things catch your attention?
  2. What does brain plasticity mean for adult humans? (Please note in this question "mean" is not asking you to define the meaning, but show the potential)
  3. Why out of all of the emotions does fear attract most attention?
  4. What other emotions do you think attract strong attention?
  5. What did Darwin say about attention?
  6. Why is your brain a competitive environment?
  7. What kind of goals and stretch activities do you set yourself?
  8. Is there a downside to attention?
  9. Are you open to other peoples ideas?
  10. What is your passion and how do you use attention and practice to develop that passion?
What questions do you have for me about the video?
